 Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know that I am transsexual?

Being transsexual is really a self-diagnosed reality. You have probably known that your gender did not match your body since early childhood. If you believe that you are transgender, you probably are. If you are not sure, then you should seek out a therapist who is experienced in working with transgender clients and discuss your situation. An experienced therapist can help you understand your situation better, but be sure that you see a therapist who is experienced in working with transsexuals. For a list of therapists who have proper and reliable qualifications, you can check out the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association (HBIGDA) web site (www.hbigda.org) and find the nearest therapist to you who is a member of the association. If you can’t find a HBIGDA member therapist who is close enough to where you live, try to get recommendations from some of the web sites for therapists in your area who have experience working with the transgender.

Is there are cure for being transsexual?

There is no cure because being transsexual is not an illness. It is not abnormal to be transsexual or transgender, it just is. You are born with one gender and the sexual organs of the other gender. What you have to figure out is how to live your life so that you feel fulfilled as a person.

If I am married to a man who is a crossdresser or a transsexual, does that make me a lesbian?

That is an interesting question that is frequently asked, and the answer is fairly simple. If you are still in love with the person you were first attracted to, then you haven’t changed. Did you identify as a lesbian when you married? If not, then you are heterosexual. You love the person, and that is not related to your sexual orientation. You have not changed, and if you have stayed with your partner, then your love has not changed. You love a person, not a gender.
